Aligning discipleship and membership

This communication regarding membership might be helpful for you to field questions and share with your pastors and leaders. A brief perspective including a link to Dan LeRoy’s membership explanation follows. Download the membership Q&A for your use, modification, and distribution.  (Q & A was updated mid September. Please review for any changes) The membership Q&A will also be available on the pastor portal. Additional resources are in development.

Given the window of opportunity we now have to help our denomination understand that membership is a means for discipleship, clarification of our “Believe, Belong, and Become” language is critically important. Discipleship is ministry, not a membership or leadership tactic.

Believe:  Maximizing opportunities to disciple people to believe.

              o  Membership condition # 1

Confession of faith in Jesus Christ as evidenced by an inner witness of new birth

through the Holy Spirit and a commitment to pursue holiness in all things.

              o  Membership condition # 2

                             Christian baptism.

Belong:  Strengthening relationships to invite and instruct believers to belong.

              o  Membership condition # 3

Instruction in, acceptance of, and a commitment to abide by The Articles of Religion,

the Elementary Principles, and the authority of The Wesleyan Church in matters of

                               church government.

Become:  Referencing Guides and Helps to Holy Living (260-268, Discipline) for each individual's

spiritual growth that may result in positional leadership.  Leadership training should

allow its participants the choice of assuming a position or serving without title.

              o  Membership condition # 4

Commitment to live out the mission and vision of The Wesleyan Church through a

discipling relationship within the local church.

In a related email last month, Wayne Schmidt said, "How will we recognize succes? Success occurs every time a disciple makes a disciple and a church multiplies itself."

May God continue to grant us success.
